Suddenly, a Business Class option appears — and the itinerary still includes the same Kigali-to-Doha flight you were looking at before.

Wait… where did that seat come from?

It didn't necessarily come from a newly opened seat. The airline's reservation system may be evaluating the availability according to the complete journey you're trying to book.

This is why airline availability isn't always as simple as looking at an aircraft and counting empty seats.

The Hidden Logic Behind It

One concept that helps explain this is called Married Segment Logic.

Instead of always treating each flight separately, an airline reservation system can evaluate connected flight segments together as one complete itinerary.

For example, availability for Kigali → Doha can be different from availability for Kigali → Doha → London.

The same physical flight can therefore have different availability depending on the origin and destination combination being searched.

Why Would Airlines Do This?

Airlines operate networks rather than isolated flights. They have limited inventory and thousands of possible origin-to-destination journeys competing for that inventory.

Their systems can therefore control which booking classes and seats are offered for particular journeys.

This is the part passengers rarely see.

When you press “Search,” you're not simply asking, “Is there an empty seat?” The system is also determining whether that inventory is available for the particular journey you're requesting.

So the next time a flight appears unavailable, don't immediately assume the aircraft is full. The answer can depend on how you're searching for the journey.
